Lucius Scribonius Libo (new character, not in the course pack)

Born around 90 BCE, he supported Pompey in 56 (perhaps as tribune of the plebs) in Pompey’s attempt to obtain a command to restore Ptolemy Auletes to the throne in Egypt. At the beginning of the civil war between Caesar and Pompey in 49, he served as a legate of Pompey. When Marcus Antonius drove him from Etruria, Scribonius took command over recruits in Campania and followed Pompey to Brundisium. Julius Caesar attempted to have Scribonius act as a mediator between himself and Pompey at Brundisium. He then commanded a fleet in the Adriatic, defeated Cornelius Dolabella, and captured Gaius Antonius (brother of Marcus Antonius) in Illyricum. Scribonius attempted to negotiate with Caesar again in 48; he became the chief officer in Pompey’s fleet, and attempted to block Marcus Antonius at Brundisium. By the end of 46 Scribonius had reconciled with Julius Caesar. Scribonius’ daughter Scribonia is married to Sextus Pompeius, younger son of Pompey.
